The third eye chakra, otherwise known as Ajna (Sanskrit: आज्ञा), is the sixth chakra, located in between your brows where your “third eye” is located. It is the center of foresight and intuition as well as psychic power. The mantra of this chakra is Om, which is believed to contain all other sounds and is the basic sound of the world. The brain and the pineal gland are associated with this chakra. This chakra is related to altered perceptions of consciousness as well as mystical states of being. It is close to the optical nerves and thus sensitive to light and visual stimulation.
Vision, intuition and wisdom are all connected to the third eye. It perceives the more subtle qualities of reality and alternate dimensions and energy. It motivates inspiration and creativity, and is strongly associated with psychic powers such as clairvoyance or clairaudience. Opening your third eye awakens intuition and inner perceptions. Sometimes hard to interpret, related visions open us up to an alternate method of interpretation. Focus and relaxation are important to delving deeply into its insight and alignment.
Some ways you can heal your third eye chakra are cultivating silence of mind, developing and trusting your intuition in your daily life, nurture your creative side, grounding yourself (see root chakra), practice divination or learn to interpret dreams. You can spend time in natural light and total darkness to help encourage the pineal gland to function better, which is connected to this chakra. Some yoga poses to try are Ardha Uttanasana (Standing Half Forward Bend), Balasana (Child’s Pose), Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Dog), and Salamba Sarvangasana (Supported Shoulderstand).
